Case Study: Manufacturer of Industrial Liquids

The Challenge

Our client, a leader in the manufacturing of specialized equipment and services for petroleum and industrial liquids commissioned the development of shelter unit prototypes for storage of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

DEF, a solution made from 67.5 percent purified water and 32.5 percent automotive-grade urea, serves as a carrying agent for the ammonia needed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. Injected into the engine exhaust gas, DEF quickly hydrolyzes and produces the oxidizing ammonia needed by the selective catalytic reduction catalyst.

Many truck stops are beginning to install bulk-dispensing systems to allow their customers replenish DEF during fuel stops. Our client wanted to build shelters to house the dispensing equipment and provide protection against weather conditions that could adversely affect the quality of the DEF.

The Solution

Mickey Engineered Vehicles was able to quickly standardize production methods to engineer and produce, in a very short amount of time, multiple shelter units. Our team used a combination FRP/Aluminum structure to provide a means to control the storage environment and mitigate the impact of hot and cold ambient temperatures, which degrade DEF quality.

Our engineers worked very closely with our customer’s design team to ensure that the specialized prototypes met the complex needs of the client’s market.

Some of the most important achievements in regards to this implementation include the development of shelters that feature 500-2,000 gallon DEF supply tank, secondary containment, lockable fill box for secure DEF delivery, automatic nozzles, and other components.

For security purposes our team outfitted the specialized prototype shelters with locking doors.

The Outcome

Our client used the specialized prototype shelters developed by Mickey Engineered Vehicles to pioneer the supply of DEF dispensing systems, even as the trucking industry works to establish the necessary infrastructure to support this requirement from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
